On April 8, Science Quiz Bowl will kick-off CSE Week for the 15th year in a row!
The Quiz Bowl is two-thirds science and one-third trivia. Teams of students with names like Roulette Wheel (last year’s winners), Alkynes of Trouble, and Steminists compete for the prize of a U of M Bookstores gift card, in the amount of:
- $100 for each member of the championship team
- $50 for each member of the 2nd place team
- $25 for each member of 3rd and 4th place teams
SQB: Teamwork, fun and friendly competition
Started as a way to celebrate the curiosity of CSE students and highlight the ways the Libraries contribute to the intellectual life of the campus, the Quiz Bowl combines teamwork, fun, and friendly competition.
“It is impressive to watch the students and the kind of knowledge they show. It’s also nice to see how collegial and supportive of each other the students are,” says Kris Fowler, Mathematics Librarian and former Science Quiz Bowl director.
Games are moderated by librarians from all over the university providing fun opportunities for students and librarians to interact.
“Librarians and CSE students have something in common: We’re both curious and love to learn new things,” says Carolyn Bishoff, Physics Librarian and Science Quiz Bowl director.“A quiz bowl is the perfect way for CSE students to show off how much they know and be a little competitive. We try to include questions that cover all things CSE, from chemistry to math to computer science, with a little sports, news, and pop culture sprinkled in.”
About CSE Week
An annual celebration of the College of Science and Engineering, CSE Week is April 8 through April 14 this year. Some other CSE Week events to be on the lookout for are:
- Cookouts in the Lind Hall Courtyard
- Dodgeball tournaments in the University Recreation and Wellness Center
- A LAN Party in Keller Hall, and
- The Golden Calculator Hunt, which asks students to scour CSE buildings for clues to the hiding spot of the prized Golden Calculator.
“Overall, we expect a wide diversity of opportunities for CSE students, faculty, and staff to enjoy what we hope is warmer weather and all of the accomplishments of the academic year,” says Plumb Bob’s Advisor, Ben Koch.
