2017 Science Quiz Bowl participantsOn April 8, Science Quiz Bowl will kick-off CSE Week for the 15th year in a row!

The Quiz Bowl is two-thirds science and one-third trivia. Teams of students with names like Roulette Wheel (last year’s winners), Alkynes of Trouble, and Steminists compete for the prize of a U of M Bookstores gift card, in the amount of:

  • $100 for each member of the championship team
  • $50 for each member of the 2nd place team
  • $25 for each member of 3rd and 4th place teams

SQB: Teamwork, fun and friendly competition

Started as a way to celebrate the curiosity of CSE students and highlight the ways the Libraries contribute to the intellectual life of the campus, the Quiz Bowl combines teamwork, fun, and friendly competition.

“It is impressive to watch the students and the kind of knowledge they show. It’s also nice to see how collegial and supportive of each other the students are,” says Kris Fowler, Mathematics Librarian and former Science Quiz Bowl director.

Games are moderated by librarians from all over the university providing fun opportunities for students and librarians to interact.

“Librarians and CSE students have something in common: We’re both curious and love to learn new things,” says Carolyn Bishoff, Physics Librarian and Science Quiz Bowl director.“A quiz bowl is the perfect way for CSE students to show off how much they know and be a little competitive. We try to include questions that cover all things CSE, from chemistry to math to computer science, with a little sports, news, and pop culture sprinkled in.”
