The Bio-Medical library is hosting the “Yoga ON Ice” exhibit by artist Nancy Chakrin as part of its rotating Art@Bio-Med exhibit series.
Artist exhibit statement
Can you imagine asking your yogini friends to perform late nighttime partner and solo yoga poses in frigid February below-zero windchill weather?
Many friends know that I would do anything for an unusual photo op, but would they? To my surprise, I soon had four models saying “YES — count me in.”
With all the excitement of the Super Bowl 2017 and the many colorful winter activities around the Twin Cities, I awoke one morning with the vision of capturing yoga poses against the backdrop of the dramatically glowing and vividly changing colors of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Ice Palace. This was a moment in time not to miss. We did some rehearsal poses inside the St Paul Hotel by the fireplace and then out to the frozen wonderland in Rice Park.
I am grateful for my yogini models Kathy Flaminio, Laurie Ellis-Young, Liz Anema and Brenda Steger for their adventurous spirits in saying YES.

About the fine art metal prints
The hi-definition dye sublimation printing process on metal has been around commercially since the 1950’s. This technology has more recently been available for archival fine art printing. The metallic art medium is infused with the photography image when the sheets are baked in high temperatures of 400 degrees. This printing technique results in a magical luminescence that I felt was most suitable in continuing the vivid translucent colorful and glowing blocks of ice.
