Fall semester 2021 has begun and with it a return to campus for students, faculty and staff.
The new locations for the Health Sciences Library (HSL) and the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology & Medicine (WHL) in the Health Sciences Education Center (HSEC) and the Phillips-Wangensteen Building (PWB) are also fully-opening with the arrival of the fall semester.
Let’s take a quick virtual mini-tour of these libraries that hit some of the highlights!
Stop 1 – HSL’s Service Desk in PWB
HSL is the new Bio-Medical Library! With our move comes a new name that’s inclusive of all the health professions that we serve. And orange is the new HSL – our spaces are color-coded with orange furnishings and wall coverings so if you see orange, you’re at the Libraries!
Our Service Desk is located on the 5th floor of PWB. The 5th floor connects to the new HSEC building via a skyway so you can quickly get to either building.
At our Service Desk you can ask for assistance with our spaces and services, request and pick-up library materials, and arrange to meet with one of our librarian experts, either in-person or online!
Stop 2- Group Study Rooms
HSL has 18 reservable study rooms that are located across PWB & HSEC. You can reserve a study room for up to 2 hours a day, up to 2 weeks in advance. All rooms have a large monitor that you can connect to for group projects and collaborative learning! They are extremely popular so be sure to reserve early to get your spot!
Stop 3 -The Makerspace
HSL’s Makerspace is located in HSEC and is now open M-F from 10am-5pm. We have 3D printers (print your own phone case), sewing machines (get started with stitching!), vinyl cutters (bedazzle your laptop cover!) and more to get your creativity on!
Stop 4 – Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology & Medicine
The Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology & Medicine (WHL) is a treasure trove of rare books, manuscripts and artifacts representing a broad range of health, medicine, and biology topics. The collection is world-renowned and used often by researchers who consult materials spanning 500 years — from 1430 to 1945.
WHL is located on the 2nd floor of PWB where the curatorial staff will meet with scholars by appointment. The reading room and classroom are fronted with large glass windows along the causeway and will feature rotating exhibits that will catch the eye of passersby. The collection itself recently moved to a new space nearby with the temperature controls needed to preserve these resources for future generations.
