Introducing Goldy Little Free Libraries

By July 22, 2022September 16th, 2023No Comments

Goldy-branded maroon-and-gold Little Free Libraries were recently installed near Rarig Center on the West Bank, the St. Paul Student Center, and at the Robert J. Jones Urban Research Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC).

One will also be installed on the East Bank near the 4th Street Ramp later this summer.

The Little Free Libraries are intended to help engage the University community and encourage reading. The project was led by University Relations with partners across campus.

The Little Free Libraries were built by University Construction and the University’s Sign Shop, while books were donated by University Libraries staff and members of the Friends of the University of Minnesota Libraries. Staff at UROC are using the Little Free Libraries to engage the North Minneapolis community.

The Libraries has even more fun books

The University Libraries offers popular reading collections at three of its libraries: Magrath (St. Paul), Walter (East Bank), and Wilson (West Bank). Along with these collections, the Libraries offers a book matchmaking service, eBooks Minnesota — an online ebook collection for all Minnesotans — and a collection of online newspapers and magazines for U of M faculty, staff, and students.

Benefits of reading

Benefits of reading include reduced stress, improved vocabulary, and a sharper mind. Studies show reading before bed can improve sleep. Reading has also been linked to increased empathy.
