The University of Minnesota hosts the 2024 Library Publishing Forum

The University of Minnesota hosted the annual Library Publishing Forum this year at the McNamara Alumni Center. The Forum marked the 10th anniversary of the Library Publishing Coalition, a community-led membership association of academic and research libraries and library consortia engaged in scholarly publishing.

The forum opened with a keynote address by Katherine Skinner, a research lead at Invest in Open Infrastructure, a nonprofit that supports open access to and participation in research. Her presentation covered the early years of the library publishing movement; its relationship to open access, open source, and open infrastructure; and the future of the movement.

Not only did the University of Minnesota host the forum, but Libraries’ staff members held several panels and presentations, including Nancy Sims, Shane Nackerud, Kate McCready, Liz Weinfurter, and Micah Gjeltema.

Their talks ranged from the complexities of open licensing and sustainability in open educational resources, to the Big Ten Open Books project, publishing the Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies, attribution and disattribtuion in Creative Commons licenses, OER textbook creation, student-authored learning materials, and more.

The UMN Libraries was an initial contributing institution of the Library Publishing Coalition and launched a publishing program in 2014. In the past 10 years, UMN Libraries Publishing has published 30 journals, 22 monographs, and over 30 textbooks.

These publications are the result of partnerships with faculty editorial boards, scholarly societies, student editorial boards, and authors across the University of Minnesota. All publications are openly accessible and founded on the value of advancing knowledge that benefits communities, the state, and the world.
