The Tradition of a Holiday Edition

By December 23, 2025January 2nd, 2026No Comments

Like many cherished holiday traditions, the Daily has long marked the season with a special edition published each December, timed to coincide with the close of the academic term and the start of winter break. These annual issues served as both a celebration of the season and a reflection of the newspaper’s evolving relationship with its readers and the surrounding community.

From its earliest holiday editions, the Daily filled its pages with lighthearted, cheerful stories centered on seasonal themes, along with a formal holiday greeting from the Daily staff to its readership.

As the years passed, the holiday issue grew more vibrant in both style and presentation. The introduction of colored ink and more elaborate layouts marked a shift toward a visually engaging presentation intended to capture readers’ attention and enhance the festive aesthetic of the edition. These design choices reflected broader changes in print journalism and printing technology, as well as an increasing emphasis on reader experience.

Holiday cheer extended beyond storytelling, as staff incorporated advertisements from local businesses promoting seasonal merchandise and gift ideas. These partnerships not only supported the newspaper financially but also strengthened connections between the publication and local businesses.

In later years, the holiday editions expanded further to include curated gift guides. These advertising supplements often featured coupons, discounts, and special promotions, providing practical value to readers while reinforcing the newspaper’s role as a community resource during the holiday season.

Beyond commercial and informational content, some holiday issues also highlighted creative expression. Poems, short reflections, and other festive writings were included to mark the holiday season and the approaching new year, offering readers a moment of reflection and celebration while showcasing the voices and talents of the Daily’s contributors.

Together, these elements transformed the Daily’s holiday editions into more than just a seasonal publication—they became a tradition in their own right. Whether through poetry, festive design, or connection to local gift giving, the holiday editions offered readers a sense of comfort and continuity, preserving the spirit of the season within the enduring legacy of the student press.

Readers may continue to experience the holiday spirit of years past through the digitized archival issues of The Minnesota Daily, available via the University Digital Conservancy. In the new year, visitors are also encouraged to visit Andersen Library during the exhibit’s final month to view Beyond the Page: Preserving the Spirit of the University Through an Independent Student Press.

Please note that the library will be closed from December 24 through January 1, 2026. It will reopen to the public on Friday, January 2, 2026, and will be available for touring from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
