About the archive

The Francis V. Gorman Art Books, Media, and Artist Archives at the University of Minnesota is home to the complete 21st Collection, and serves as a repository for the entirety of the 21st Editions archive.

About the speakers

Enterprising and relentlessly self-driven, Steven Albahari has pursued a desire to create and find outlets in music, engineering, photography, and business-building. He is a graduate of Bennington College (’82), where he studied avant-garde jazz on tenor saxophone with Bill Dixon while earning degrees in Photography and Theatrical Lighting, he stayed on for a postgraduate year to edit Silo, the college annual. Albahari then enrolled at MIT (’86), where he practiced cinéma vérité with British film director Richard Leacock. When he wasn’t busy with cinema, Albahari was photographing, printing, and binding his own still life images. With fellow Bennington and MIT affiliate, Jim Fournier, Albahari embarked on a new entrepreneurial venture: JLF Designs, Inc., producing and marketing high-end shoulder bags and other handmade leather goods. After about five years, Albahari left JLF to pursue his ongoing photographic interests. Steven Albahari founded 21st Editions, Inc, The Art of the Book® in 1998.

Pam Clark has been the Office Manager at 21st Editions since 2005. Being very organized and not afraid to ask questions, Clark became the liaison between the publisher and the production artists, able to take the word and image to help direct the binding and production. Clark enjoys sourcing materials for production, creating custom handmade papers, and developing the overall design for the individual titles, as well as the 21st Collection as a whole.

Crissy Welzen is a Graphic Designer currently living and working in Rochester, New York. She studied fine art at CCA (then known as the California College of Arts and Crafts) in Oakland. During her tenure at 21st Editions, Welzen designed 26 titles that include work by photographers Imogen Cunningham, Sally Mann, and Masao Yamamoto, among others. Her expertise lies in typography and typeface selection which she currently applies to her work. The foundation of Welzen’s design work can be best summarized by the words of Max Lomont, former Director of Packaging and Design for Quaker Oats in Chicago, her greatest teacher and inspiration, and her grandfather, “The execution of an effective design should have impact, simplicity, legibility, versatility, consistency, and honesty.” (Applied Photography, Number 58,1974)

John Hamilton Metoyer is a Chicago-based educator, poet, and photographer whose work focuses on the enigmatic aspects of human existence. Described as photo magic realism, Metoyer’s photographic work has been featured in domestic and international exhibitions, books, magazines, and journals and is widely represented in public and private collections. In addition to visual and literary work, Metoyer works in higher education, holding advanced degrees in English, creative writing, educational history and administration, and has done extensive graduate work in photography. Metoyer teaches studio art, English, literature, and graduate courses in higher education administration. In addition to teaching, Metoyer has served in the capacity of department chairperson, dean of academics, college vice president, and interim college president.
