Photo of books and posters from the Bibliophilia exhibit at Hennepin GalleryAs early as the 1830s, free African Americans began collecting books and memorabilia that document the history and contributions of people of African descent.

In addition to celebrating the beauty, romance, and workmanship of African American material culture, this exhibit from the Givens Collection of African American Literature celebrates Black History Month and demonstrates how the act of collecting African American literature is intimately tied to placing African American history at the center of American history and culture.
