¡Cuba! Challenging Perceptions

A classic car in Cuba, a bicycle with a shade to protect the rider from the sun, and an early modern map of the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola

Photo collage by exhibit designer Darren Terpstra

The story of the Caribbean island of Cuba is one of conquest, intervention by foreign powers, and dictatorship. The story of the Cuban people is one of courage, resilience, and pride. This exhibition highlights perceptions of Cuba by outsiders: conquerors, foreign powers, and visitors. It challenges us to seek out the voices of the Cuban people for a true understanding of our island neighbor.
