Walter Library received its name in 1959 in honor of Frank Keller Walter, who held the position of University Librarian from 1921 until his retirement in 1943.

Built in 1922/23, Walter was first opened to the public as the University of Minnesota’s main library in 1924. The building went through a major renovation from 1999-2002 and remains one of the architectural treasures of the Twin Cities campus.

We will host a panel with undergraduate student researchers who will share their experiences of doing research in the sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Spend a cozy afternoon relaxing and reading in the unique Upson room (102) in Walter Library. There will be hot chocolate and snacks to enjoy. Bring a book to read, select one from a pop-up library of fun books or try out the Libby app for ebooks and audiobooks.
In mid-January, the hottest place to be is the Walter Library! The Writing Across the Curriculum Program and University Libraries warmly invite UMN faculty members, graduate instructors, and teaching assistants to join us for a productive and collaborative day focused on teaching and supporting students with researching, reading, and writing.
Grab your notebook, pen, and aspirations for 2026! Learn how to set up bullet journal layouts and practice making your own. You can make bullet journaling work for New Year goals, semester planning, or yearly lists -- birthdays, holidays, reading, movies -- the sky is the limit. Join us on Tuesday, January 13 from 12-1pm.
Free, no experience necessary. We'll provide dot grid paper or you can bring your own journal!

Join us at Wilson Library (west bank) for PAWS (Pet Away Worry and Stress) from UMN Boynton Health. Drop in at any time to meet registered therapy animal teams—including dogs, bunnies, cats, chickens, and other therapy animals. Sessions are FREE and open to the University of Minnesota community. All are welcome!

We will have a creative study break each week like button making, bracelet making, and more or make something in the Toaster. Free snacks and treats. We will have fun reading books to read or check out.
Learn about the ways to do research on campus (e.g. job, volunteer, for course credit, UROP, etc.), how to get started, finding potential faculty mentors, exploring past student projects, and more.

Need a relaxing study break? In collaboration with RecWell, Wilson Library on west bank is hosting yoga on Friday’s from 12-12:30 on the first floor. This class is great for beginners and those seeking the mental benefits of yoga. All fitness levels are welcome.
The event is free and open to all. You do NOT need to have a RecWell membership or be part of RecWell’s Fit pass program. Bring a yoga mat, if possible, or there will be some available to use. All are welcome including students, staff and faculty.
Come to Walter Library on Tuesday, October 21 anytime from 1-2:30. Build and take a free mini-LEGO kit and explore all that The Toaster and Walter Library has to offer! Representatives from our academic support and tutoring resources will also be there to answer your questions about how to get academic support.
